Recycling Centre Site Visit ✨

Today I had the opportunity to visit the Hazardous Waste Recycling Centre in Gateshead (i): a tour organised by Suez, the site owner ♻️

I am pleased with how transparent Laura and Hannah, our guides, have been while explaining what happens to the local recycling and general waste. No question has been left unanswered, and topics have been discussed with the most environmentally friendly tone: everything led to the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 🙌🏻

The overall experience exceeded my expectations as the amount of knowledge I gained was HUGE ⛰️

This is how I would summarise today’s experience in few points:

1. Disposable vapes are a PROBLEM 💨

Strangely classified by UK Legislation as “toys, leisure and sport equipment”, they have been responsible for numerous fires at the recycling centre. E-cigarettes contain lithium batteries, which can easily ignite when segregated with the other waste streams. Furthermore, recycling one 200L barrel full of disposable vapes costs more than £2000 😰

2. Machines that sort general waste out DO NOT EXIST ⚙️

Due to complex composition of general waste, there is no machine or automated process able to effectively separate non-recyclables from recyclables that ended up in the general waste. At Suez, sorting is done BY HANDS 🤲🏻

3. Energy-from-Waste (EFW) requires A LOT of ENERGY ⚡️

Suez’s EFW facility has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 30.000 homes via waste incineration. However, the majority of energy goes back into the facility to keep the process going: fire is on 24/7 🔥

4. Separate food waste segregation at home is COMING SOON 🍔

Around 6.5 MILLION tonnes of food waste come from households every year. The shocking thing is: around 70% of that food waste IS STILL EDIBLE when people dispose of it (4.5 MILLION tonnes). Suez compared it to 90 Royal Albert Halls! 😱

5. Load contamination is a serious thing ☣️

Staff works hard every day to ensure skips contain the waste they have been designed for. When hazardous materials get in the same bin with recyclables, the WHOLE load becomes hazardous. This means that all the waste contained in that bin is very likely to lose its recycling potential. As it has been said today: “It is better losing some recycling in the general waste than contaminating an entire load of recycling and losing all of it” 😞 This is such a powerful sentence.

I've taken up reading historic newspapers as a hobby and I thought you'd enjoy this story from the Coventry Evening Telegraph. "Heavy Traffic - There was heavy traffic on all roads leading to Silverstone from an early hour this morning, but the filter colour system introduced at the last meeting was again successful and there were few long delays. In order to regulate the traffic, police had installed in the control tower of the former RAF aerodrome seven radio stations linked with key points over a 25-mile radius." This is from the 20th of August, 1949! As I write to you today, there are roadworks on the road between Brackley and Silverstone, which just makes me feel that news is 100% cyclical and there will ALWAYS be traffic around Silverstone. <3

I actually have a theory about this which gets into the sort of nerdy shit I'd make a video about if I was a man with a decent camera and an office. but so Silverstone is in several English counties:

looking at Silverstone on a map, it's clearly in what you'd call a black hole for ley lines. for anyone who didn't grow up in the UK in the era before the internet gave us something to do with our time, ley lines are alleged mystical power lines that criss-cross the UK and do sort of coincide with some motorways probably because that's kinda how the landscape is.

anyway, the idea is you can draw lines between significant monuments or like, random hills people have decided might have some connection to woo and then that will represent ancient energies. for no doubt very serious reasons the epicentre of all these is a tiny village called Parsley Hay halfway between Sheffield and Stoke on Trent, which I am sure does fairly well out of the related tourist industry.

more significant, in terms of British road mapping, is the existence of Little Chef roadside uhhhh cafés? diners? idk what you classify them as. like the druids of old they are now gone but their energies remain.

Silverstone sits in an uneven triangulation of former Little Chef spots:

not only does Towcester's especially hallowed, double Little Chef site unbalance things nearly irrepairably, three of these Little Chef are in Northamptonshire (the double and Old Stratford to the east) while only Buckingham is in Buckinghamshire.

these are the sort of forces that should not be messed with. it is clear why there are always traffic jams around Silverstone and it's not just because everyone invented Milton Keynes (not pictured, off to the east) then forgot to connect it to anywhere else properly it's because the roadside balance has been greatly disturbed.

now that Little Chef is no more this cannot be corrected. no amount of M&S Simply Food can ever neutralise the vibes and so it is that Silverstone is doomed to eternal traffic by the arrogance of mankind's hubristic building.

Related to your Instagram story about support group for ‘high functioning’/low support needs autistics, I’m really frustrated because my local adult autism support group specifies that it’s for people without learning disabilities only and I asked why it was so exclusive and they said it was the condition for getting it funded by the local council (I’m in the uk) because they were ‘already funding too many learning disability groups’. I don’t think I can do much to combat this because it’s a decision made a lot higher up than me but it’s really frustrating because I really want to be in community with all kinds of different autistic people and I think people should be able to decide for themselves if the group is relevant to them. I also help run the disability society at my uni but obviously that selects for the sorts of disabled people who manage to go to uni. I would classify myself as having low support needs rn but it’s changed a lot since I was younger and I still struggle a lot in ways where I don’t always relate to other autistics at uni, a lot of whom are late diagnosed and struggle a lot with unmasking. I’ve never really been able to hide my autism and I was diagnosed quite young so I often feel a bit alone. I don’t know if you have any advice/comments to this, but I really wish there was more inclusive community with all kinds of different autistic people with different needs because I think we need to have that solidarity. -S

I'm so sorry to hear that is happening, that really fucking sucks. I agree that you will benefit a lot from being in community with a wide swathe of types of Autistic people, as all of us can -- and your experience points to how limiting and oversimplified "support needs" labels really are. Though the term may have a more pleasant connotation than functioning labels, it still flattens the Autistic experience to the point of being nearly useless. Many people who are nonverbal are relatively low in support needs; some people who can mask have high support needs, and many of us fluctuate depending on the day or where we are in life.

I think you may want to look outside of formal institutional channels. Nonprofits and government agencies will approach Autism inclusion in a very dehumanizing bureaucratic way. What you need I think is a community space made by us, and for us. Look up any local ASAN chapters in your area-- and since you're in the UK, look up Neurodiverse Self Advocacy UK as well. Selfadvocacygroups.co.uk is another place to turn. See if you can find local groups run by these organizations, and try hopping onto sites like Meetup and even Facebook to see if there are ongoing Autistic social groups happening as well. there is almost certainly something. Eventbrite also has a lot of virtual community events these days, oddly.

I know that it's a big ask to tell you to create your own groups, but after you've gotten the lay of the land in your area and gotten to meet a few people, consider organizing small hang outs for people in the community -- movie watching parties, outings to accessible spaces, attending a parade or festival together, something like that. We take care of one another, and community is a thing we build, one relationship at a time -- it's not a thing we can trust powerful institutions to give us or grant us.
